Reconciling Strong IP and Access to Medicine in Poorer Countries

The IIPS is pleased to announce that Shahan Islam, Esq., Senior Corporate Counsel in the IP Enforcement Group at Pfizer, Inc., will join us for our last meeting of the 2008-2009 season on Thursday, June 11, 2009, at the Pfizer headquarters, 235 East 42nd Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues), 10th Floor, Room 94, in New York City from 6:00-8:00 p.m.   Mr. Islam’s presentation,  "Are Strong Intellectual Property and Access to Medicines Reconcilable Goals in Developing Countries?" will address the conflict between innovative pharmaceutical companies interest in strong intellectual property protection worldwide and the need for the broad distribution of modern medicines for the population-at-large, especially for the inhabitants of developing countries.   He will address the issues that need to be considered in evaluating these conflicting goals and begin a discussion whether strong intellectual property and access to medicines in poorer countries can be reconcilable goals. 

Mr. Islam has managed intellectual property enforcement matters for Pfizer, Inc. in the USA, Africa, Middle East, Asia and Latin America by providing hands-on litigation advice, strategy, and guidance.  He has also drafted and lobbied for stronger IP laws that would meet the World Trade Organization's standards in the same regions, working with Pfizer's international markets, health officials and lawmakers.
