5:30-7:30pm

All of our clients are engaged in using websites, social media, and the Internet generally in marketing and communicating with customers. Information including a person’s name, picture, or likeness can be easily accessible, but its use for commercial purposes requires permission. In many jurisdictions, such use requires permission in writing. There are class actions pending against Facebook and others will likely follow. The International Intellectual Property Society (“IIPS”) is very pleased that Richard Kurnit, Esq. will present “Right of Publicity and Social Media” on Wednesday, Oct 12th, 2011, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the 10th floor offices of Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz PC at 488 Madison Avenue (between 51st and 52nd St) in New York. Note: the presentation will begin at 5:45 PM.
Rick Kurnit is widely recognized as an expert in the area of Right of Publicity. He successfully defended several of the early cases, testing and extending the scope of the claim. In his presentation, Rick will illustrate through examples the scope of the claim and advise on how to counsel clients to navigate the complexities of what constitutes “identity” and “commercial use” in the digital world.
Rick Kurnit was named Best Lawyers’ 2011 New York Media Lawyer of the Year. He is ranked by Chambers USA as one of two star individuals nationwide in Advertising law. Rick teaches advertising and intellectual property law and frequently lectures on various aspects of marketing communications at universities and conferences in Asia, Europe, and North America. Rick’s recent publications include: the Advertising Law chapter in Corporate Legal Departments (2011); and "Exclusivity of Sponsors" in Journal of Sponsorship 379 (2010). Rick is Vice Chairman of the ABA Committee on Private Advertising Litigation. Rick served as law clerk to Federal Judge Thomas P. Griesa, and was associated for five years with Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. He is a graduate of Columbia College (AB, magna cum laude, 1972) Phi Beta Kappa, and Harvard Law School (JD, cum laude, 1975).
