** 2007-2008 YEAR IN REVIEW **

The IIPS hosted eight seminars covering a vast array of relevant international intellectual property topics presented by world-renowned experts during its 2007 – 2008 season. The events afforded attendees the opportunity to learn about current trends and issues as well as to participate in stimulating conversations with industry peers. Participants also received up to sixteen (16) CLE credits for taking part in the events, including two (2) ethics credits. The presentations included:

• Ethics in the Patent Field (September 2007) in which Robert B. Levy, Esq., Group Manager – Senior Partner Counsel to Thomas Licensing Inc., provided an insightful seminar on recent developments in the Federal Circuit and District Courts regarding inequitable conduct. Attendees earned two (2) non-transitional CLE credits in Ethics.

• Geographical Indications (October, 2007) in which Alan Datri, Senior Counselor in the Office of the Assistant Director General responsible for the Sector of Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications at WIPO, and Justin Hughes, Professor of Law and Director of the Intellectual Property Law Program at the Cardozo School of Law, updated participants on the current status of the international legal framework for the protection of geographical indications and the general types of protection systems that exist worldwide. Attendees earned two (2) non-transitional CLE credits.

• An Argument for Strong Intellectual Property Laws (November, 2007) in which Shahan Islam, Esq., Senior Corporate Counsel of the IP Enforcement Group at Pfizer, Inc., presented his arguments for the need of governments to protect intellectual property. He supported that argument that strong intellectual property procedures are consistent with access to medicines in poorer countries. He also offered litigation strategies that have proven successful in regions where classic intellectual property protection is not available. Attendees earned two (2) non-transitional CLE credits.

• The Global Politics of Inoperability: Intellectual Property and Openness in an Information Society (February, 2008) in which Dr. Laura DeNardis, Executive Director of the Information Society Project at Yale Law School, described some of the global implications of the degree of openness in information and communication technology. She also addressed global trends to procure information technologies based on standards of openness and the implications of such standards on developing countries. Attendees earned two (2) non-transitional CLE credits.

• Peer to Patent: Community Patent Review (March, 2008) in which Dr. Beth Simone Noveck, Director of the Institute for Information Law and Policy at New York Law School, discussed the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s pilot program to improve patent quality and scientific information available to Examiners by openning the patent examination process to public participation. Attendees earned two (2) non-transitional CLE credits.

• Best Practices in PCT Prosecution and Current Initiatives at the WIPO (April, 2008) in which Matthew R. Bryan, Director of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT ) Legal Division, provided a review of the current processes and advantages of filing a PCT application as well as outlined recent changes at WIPO and potential future developments. Attendees earned two (2) non-transitional CLE credits.

• Tafas v. Dudas (May, 2008) in which Steven J. Moore, Esq., Partner, Kelley Drye & Warren, LLP, summarized this landmark suit that invalidated the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s new claims and continuations rules. He provided a behind-the-scenes account of this landmark suit and summarized the potential implications of the ruling to domestic and international practice. Attendees earned two (2) non-transitional CLE credits.

• Current Trends in Intellectual Property and Fashion (June, 2008) in which Professor Susan Scafidi, visiting professor at Fordham Law School, highlighted the Design Piracy Prohibition Act that is currently discussed in Congress and its relationship to international trends. Attendees earned two (2) non-transitional CLE credits.

The IIPS will continue to host an informative and stimulating set of events for the 2008 – 2009 season. Formal announcements will follow throughout the year to update members and interested parties of each presentation.

The IIPS welcomes new members who are interested in current IP topics. Membership in the IIPS (currently $60 per year) entitles you to attend all regular meetings during the September, 2008 – September, 2009 season. Membership provides you with the opportunity to earn New York CLE credit on topics of interest for a fraction of the cost of other institutional CLE events. In addition, you will be exposed to world-renowned authorities in their fields and senior level international patent officers. There is also the opportunity to have dinner with the speakers and fellow industry peers to continue discussions in a more informal setting.
