The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and International Intellectual Property Society (IIPS) are very pleased to announce a joint event on Geographical Indications featuring Alan Datri, Senior Counsellor in the Office of the Assistant Director General responsible for the Sector of Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications at WIPO, and Justin Hughes, Professor of Law and Director of the Intellectual Property Law Program at the Cardozo School of Law, at our second meeting of the 2007-2008 season on Tuesday, October 16, 2007, at WIPO Headquarters, 25th floor of 2 UN Plaza (north side of 44th Street, slightly west of 1st Avenue), from 5-7 pm. All attendees will be welcome at a reception afterwards hosted by the IIPS, which will offer many of the food and drink items which make use of geographical indication protection.
Mr. Datri is involved in the formulation and implementation of strategic plans and policies with respect to the activities of the Sector. He will discuss the international legal framework for the protection of geographical indications and the general types of protection systems that currently exist worldwide. Professor Hughes, who authored an article in 2006 for the Hastings Law Journal entitled “Champagne, Feta, and Bourbon: The Spirited Debate About Geographical Indications,” will focus on the systems and positions of the US and EU, and will take a position on the best solution to the debate. Professor Hughes’ article will be among the informative handout materials on this topic.
The fee for non-members is $20. Admission for law school students is $10. The nominal $60 annual membership dues fee may be enclosed with the attached membership application. Membership entitles you to attend this event and other regular meetings during the September 2007-September 2008 year at no charge.
